The Amber Doors team were out in full force on Sunday 31 May
2015 as they took part in the Great Midlands Fun Run. The 8.5 mile route took the team from Sutton
Coldfield’s town centre, through the beautiful Sutton Park (including the
notorious Cardiac Hill!) before leading them downhill towards the finish line
in the town centre.
This year the Amber Doors team were running to raise money
for the nearby John Taylor Hospice, which has been providing care for patients
in the Birmingham area for over 100 years.
The hospice is a not for profit enterprise, and has returned to its
principles of mutuality whilst retaining the NHS values of high quality
care. It relies upon generous donations
from the public to help to keep the John Taylor Hospice team providing the
vital service required by so many people within the city.
The hospice doesn’t just provide palliative care for
patients, it also offers occupational therapy, social work services,
physiotherapy and dietary advice. The
patient’s immediate family are also fully supported by the team, and respite
care can also be provided for those affected by serious illness.
The Great Midlands Fun Run has been taking place for the
last 13 years; with 7,000 men, women, children and dogs bravely taking part each year to
raise money for charity. The run has
been created to be a fun event which is open to people of all ages and
disabilities, ranging from elite running club member entrants through to people
dressing up in wild and wacky outfits.
This year even saw a team of 20 firefighters pulling a 15-tonne fire
engine around the course!
The course may have been pretty tough at times and the Amber
Doors team certainly felt a little sore the day after the race, but it was all
worth it to help to raise money for such a valuable cause. The final amount the team have managed to
raise for the hospice is still to be confirmed, but they are grateful to all
those who kindly donated to such a worthy cause.
